Q&A: What’s the Difference Between Drupal and Joomla?

Beautiful girl in the street cafe

A colleague, who needed to decide between using Drupal or Joomla for her company, asked me to explain the differences between the two and why Start Right preferred Drupal. Here’s what I told here:

Modules and Extensions???

Drupal, like Joomla uses “modules” or “extensions/plugins” that have been tested by thousands and approved for use in the Drupal community. The difference with Drupal’s modules and other content management systems is the modularity. Drupal starts out with a very basic frame so that you can add exactly what you need without unnecessary software getting in the way.

Side Effects

Installing plugins & extensions from WordPress and Joomla can often feel like an Advil commercial (Or the commercial below). It gets rid of your headache, but it may also cause other problems
  • Upset stomach, mild heartburn, diarrhea, constipation.
  • Bloating, gas.
  • Dizziness with headaches.
  • Skin itching or rash.
  • Blurred vision or ringing in your ears.
  • Nervousness.
They fix a problem, but often times open up several others. Drupal, though not completely perfect, has a much smarter module system and core that give you more expected results when installing them. It takes all of the assets, compresses them (makes them smaller) and delivers them at the right time.

Look at the Community

Drupal currently has 16,052 modules compared to Joomla’s 8588 extensions. That’s roughly 50% more adoption. With 800,000+ members in the Drupal community, it’s safe to say Drupal is growing for the future.

Drupal shines with more complex websites. It’s a great solution for people who want to build feature-rich websites and it’s a great solution for large enterprises. That’s our sweet spot.

Drupal Love

A recent client of mine who’s website uses over 100 modules and still loads in seconds loves her website which runs on Drupal.

“Start Right designed a clean, flawless logo that represented my company perfectly. He took that same concept to the design of my website and all of its elements.”

A Use Case For Joomla Today

Take a look at this article. It’s a pretty objective case for whether Joomla is still good. I appreciated the chart near the bottom of the article that showed where each CMS currently stands.

The White House Uses Drupal

I also found out why White House now uses Drupal.

“Security is fundamentally built into the development process because the community is made up of people from all across the world, and they look at the source code from the very start of the process until it’s deployed and after”

Terri Molini of Open Source for America

What Google Has to Say

I kept digging. I did a search today to see where Drupal and Joomla stands in interest on Google. Here are the results.

Start Right’s Conclusion

My conclusion is this. Joomla can be great for many things, but if you’re running a small business that has a lot going on and your website is used to generate more than 30% of your sales. Go with Drupal.

So now it’s your turn!

Tell me your stories and uses of the two. Which one do you use and love? (If you’re wondering, Super Amazing loves WordPress too. It’s perfect for startups that need the essentials). If you’re in need of a website for your startup, I offer a package that runs WordPress. It’s more than a website
